Frequently asked questions about Brazilian Jiu Jitsu.

1. What is Brazilian Jiu Jitsu?

Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is a martial art focusing upon grappling techniques particularly on the ground.

Jiu Jitsu was brought to Brazil from Japan by Mitsuyo Maeda who taught his art to the Gracie family. The Gracie’s then developed the art into modern day Brazilian Jiu Jitsu.

2. Who is the instructor and what are his qualifications?

Simon Hunt is the chief instructor at Kings Lynn Freestyle Martial Arts.

Simon is a Blue belt in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and a certified instructor under Ze Marcello and Steve Cowan.

With over 16 years training in martial arts including a 3rd Dan Black Belt in Karate, Simon is one of the most experienced instructors in Norfolk.

3. What can I expect from a Brazilian Jiu Jitsu class?

Class starts with a good warm up including jogging, floor exercises and stretching. This is followed by technique practice and drills and finally live sparring (rolling).

We do not accept students with bad attitudes. Rather everyone trains together in a relaxed, friendly and safe environment.

4. Is there a grading system?

Yes. As with many other martial arts, Brazilian Jiu Jitsu has its own ranking system. Students begin training as White belts and progress to Blue, Purple, Brown and eventually Black Belt.

Belts are awarded based upon technical knowledge of Jiu Jitsu and skill in live sparring. Students of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu only get promoted when they are ready.

It is expected to take around 10 years to be promoted from White to Black belt.

5. Can I enter competitions?

Yes. There are several competitions held around the country which you may enter. Competitions are divided by belt rank and by weight to ensure that students compete with similarly skilled opponents.

However, you do not have to compete. We will NEVER try to force a student into competition.

6. How often should I train?

As often as possible!

7. What clothing and equipment do I need?

When you first come to class, you will need to wear a T-shirt and shorts or jogging bottoms.

If you have a Judo suite, wear that. Other martial arts uniforms are most likely not strong enough to practice Jiu Jitsu in.

When you are ready, you will be required to purchase a Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Gi (uniform) and belt.
